Methodology
StoveRatings is a readable copy of one public database, plus a few tools whose math is labeled as ours. The snapshot date is 2026-10-23. Row counts in that snapshot: 1,444 room-heater rows, 265 of them currently certified, 192 central-heater rows, and 41 of them currently certified.
Where the files came from
There is no bulk download. The numbers were saved from EPA's Certified Wood Heater Database result tables and parsed locally. The database application lives on cfpub.epa.gov. That host's robots.txt disallows automated access, so this site never fetches it in the build or on a schedule. A refresh means a person saves the result pages and starts the manual rebuild workflow. The landing page EPA publishes is the Certified Wood Heater Database.
EPA content is a U.S. government work and is in the public domain. Three Pines Company LLC operates this site and is not EPA.
Model lines, not store models
Each EPA row is a model line. The cell often names several retail models, separated by a colon and then commas. This site keeps one page per manufacturer-and-model-line pair. When the same line has two different test rows, both rows are on that page. Retail names are split for the lookup. The room-heater split produced 3,258 names, 2,959 distinct.
Brands
The manufacturer cell and the brand a shopper types are often different. A retail hub exists only when the brand name appears in the EPA manufacturer string or in the model text. The hub page quotes that evidence. Rows that do not contain the brand stay under the EPA manufacturer name. The mapping file is data/brand-crosswalk.csv.
Inserts
Model text matches /insert|\b-I\b/i. Labeled name indicates insert. No manual overrides are applied in this snapshot. The full room-heater file has 112 matching rows, 26 of them currently certified. That is narrower than every name a person might call an insert.
What the export does not have
No certification number, no certification date, and no separate insert column. The New flag appears on only a few rows. 2020 NSPS compliance is a Yes or No cell: 417 room-heater rows say Yes, including previously certified models, and 264 of the currently certified room-heater rows say Yes. 1 currently certified room-heater row says No.
EPA's Burn Wise material has described the program's published history as running through 2025, while the database landing page was updated after that. If the database is retired, this site will keep the last snapshot and will keep the date on it.
Sorted lists and the size calculator
A highest-efficiency page sorts by the HHV percent EPA printed, blanks excluded, ties ordered by lower emission rate and then name. A lowest-emission page sorts by grams per hour the same way. The stove size calculator multiplies square feet by planning factors printed on that page. Those factors are not from EPA.
Firewood
The firewood table is not EPA data. Every row cites the University of Arkansas extension page that compiles USDA Forest Service Leaflet No. 559. The build refuses a firewood row with no source URL.
What does currently certified mean here?
It means the row was in EPA's result with previously certified models excluded, saved on 2026-10-23. The export does not include a certification date, so this site does not say certified on a particular day.
Why are some numbers missing?
EPA left the cell blank. Older room-heater rows often have no HHV efficiency, firebox volume, or CO. This site shows Not listed. It does not fill the blank with zero.
Does StoveRatings score stoves?
No. Lists that look sorted are ordered by one EPA number, and the page says which number. Ties stay ties. There is no star rating and no review score.
